The European Commission is launching the preparation of a consultation towards transition pathway: participate!

What’s a transition pathway?

The entire European industrial ecosystem needs to embrace a swift green & digital transition towards a transformation of business models and value chains. This will help Europe becoming a greener, digital and resilient economy.

Such transitions require concrete and actionable plans (transition pathways), which are developed for each of the industrial ecosystems. The transition pathways consist of the most important elements to be addressed in an actionable plan to make the transition possible.

These elements include:

  • infrastructure
  • investments and funding
  • regulation and public governance
  • research & innovation, techniques and technological solutions
  • skills
  • social dimension
  • sustainable competitiveness

Which are the industrial ecosystems?

The EC has identified 14 industrial ecosystems (in the image here below), as part of the updated Industrial strategy, after a consultation of EU stakeholders.

For each of them, a transition patheway has been launched (tourism, chemicals, proximity & social economy, construction, mobility, textile) or is about to be launched.

The transition pathway for the Aerospace and Defence industrial ecosystems

For aerospace & defence industrial ecosystems, DG DEFIS (Defence Industry & Space) is launching the preparation of a dedicated Transition Pathway for the Aerospace and Defence ecosystem (ASD)* . The intention is to support its transformation taking into account both the challenges and opportunities of the dual transition. Along with this, it aims also tackling the increasing geopolitical tensions and the strategic nature of the ecosystem.

As stated on DG DEFIS pages, “The Transition Pathway will contribute to the development of a business case for the transition to resilient, innovative, sustainable, and digital ecosystem in a co-creation process with Members States, industry and all stakeholders, including social partners and non-governmental organisations“.

Interested entities can contribute to this preparatory consultation until 15 October 2023 via a dedicated on-line form.

The questions in this consultation cover the sustainable competitiveness, as well as aspects of regulatory environment, innovation, investment, infrastructure, the social and internal market dimension (among others).

*As a reminder, the The Aerospace and Defence (ASD) ecosystem, as defined in the EU Industrial Strategy, covers manufacturing companies in aeronautics, space and defence, space operators, data and service providers, and research institutes. This ecosystem supplies the EU with crucial capacities for strengthening overall resilience, technological sovereignty and open strategic autonomy, also with regards to critical infrastructure and security and protection of its citizens and territory
